From amilevin at optonline.net Wed Apr 1 10:49:59 2009 From: amilevin at optonline.net (Amitai Levin) Date: Wed, 01 Apr 2009 11:49:59 -0400 Subject: [Tif-mail] Pre Pesach Safety Tips from Hatzolah of Passaic / Clifton EMS Message-ID: Pesach Cleaning During the hectic days leading up to Yom Tov, it is common for people to get distracted. Therefore, it is extra important to keep an attentive eye on small children. There have been too many tragedies involving infants and children left unattended with buckets of water. A serious area of concern is poisonings and burns from cleansers. Some cleansers are fatal if ingested and can cause severe bodily burns if not handled properly (i.e. St. Moritz). We recommend selecting from readily available cleansers that are proven non-harmful. Bedikas Chameitz It is important to be as careful as possible whenever an open flame is involved. The danger is exacerbated when an open flame is traveling around the house in the quest for Chametz. Young children should not be permitted to walk around the house holding a candle. Please contact your local Rav to determine if flashlights are halachically permissible as an alternative if you are concerned that using a candle is not safe in your home. Biur Chametz The Jewish residents of Passaic and Clifton are fortunate to have a central location for Biur Chametz which certainly minimizes the great risk involved were everyone to make individual fires. However, even in a controlled and supervised Biur Chametz environment, a heightened sense of awareness and precaution is necessary. For instance, do not throw plastics into the fire, and never throw combustibles (such as an empty deodorant can) into a fire. These can explode and cause serious harm even to bystanders standing at a distance. Cooking Hatzolah of Passaic/Clifton EMS would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the dangers posed by Carbon Monoxide. On Yom Tov (especially this year with 2 days of Yom Tov followed immediately by Shabbos), we are more likely to leave the oven on, or leave a flame burning on the stove. Hatzolah has prepared a 4 page easy to read informative guide on the dangers of CO. The guide can be downloaded here . Wishing all a Chag Kasher Vesameach! This is being done to allow individuals to say Birchas HaChama at the earliest opportunity following Shacharis, because of the Halachic principle of "zerizin makdimin", demonstrating our eagerness to fulfill this special Mitzva which is done only once every 28 years. As well, a communal Birchas HaChama, that will take place later in the morning, is being planned. (It will probably take place about 8:00am.) This is especially important to allow for the participation of children who would not be able to get up too early, and also allows adults to fulfill the Mitzva "Be'Rov Am", with a significant number of people, which gives greater honor and distinction to the Mitzva. Please make sure to give special attention and care to this Mitzva; the next opportunity is in the year 2037! (There are some Poskim who say that Bechorim should eat some Mezonos or HaMotzi, which constitutes a Seuda, immediately after the Siyum concludes. There will be cake etc. available for those who wish to do so. Other Poskim are lenient, and do not require that one eat right away.) * We will exit the Shul for Birchas HaChama. There is a likelihood that we will need to walk up one block, to the corner of Boulevard & Pennington, in order to see the sun and say the Beracha. (We hope that the weather will not interfere.) We will allow enough time for people to congregate and say the Tefillos and Beracha together. It will be cold at that early hour, so dress accordingly. * We will be saying the text of Tefillos cited by the Mishna Berura. It should take about 10 minutes to complete. I am attaching a PDF of the Tefillos that we will say; the same Tefillos will be said at the communal Birchas HaChama at 8:00am in the park. (Some versions of the Tefillos have addition sections, so it might be easier to use the attached PDF.) I encourage everyone who is not saying Birchas HaChama after the early Shacharis, to attend the communal Birchas HaChama at 8:00am. It is important to fulfill the Mitzva in a fashion that will remain etched in our memories for (at least) another 28 years! When we arrived in Passaic, New Jersey in 1995, Eliezer was four years old and little did we know that the shul we would join would play a vital role in his life. Tifereth Israel, one of Passaic's oldest and most prominent congregations, was the closest synagogue to our home. Immediately, Eliezer and Rabbi Solomon Weinberger, the shul's rabbi, developed a close relationship. Eliezer gravitated to Rabbi Weinberger who exhibited the right touch with Eliezer. Before we knew it, Eliezer was sitting on the pulpit next to Rabbi Weinberger. Soon Eliezer would join Rabbi Weinberger when he recited Kaddish. The shul membership was very accepting of Eliezer. They realized that Eliezer was atypical and they went with the flow. One member told me of the following incident. Eliezer would stride across the pulpit after the rabbi's sermon to extend a "yasher koach" to Rabbi Weinberger, however, no one else on the pulpit did the same. This particular member pointed out to the shul president, "I don't understand! This child who is autistic says yasher koach to the rabbi and no one else on the pulpit does the same!" Beginning with the very next Shabbat the gentlemen on the pulpit would shake the rabbi's hand after his sermon. Eliezer attends Jewish Education For Special Children. This is a religious program on Sundays for developmentally disabled children who are unable to attend yeshiva. Approximately nine years ago a video portrayed the school and it highlighted the relationship between Rabbi Weinberger and Eliezer. The warm feeling that Eliezer developed for Rabbi Weinberger continued after the rabbi's retirement. And his successor, Rabbi Aaron Cohen, similarly reached out to Eliezer and Eliezer reciprocated. Eventually, Eliezer "graduated" to sit with the congregation. He sat next to Harry Fruhman, a former classmate of mine at Yeshiva University. Harry always reached out to Eliezer and would show him the place in the siddur and chumash. At Eliezer's Bar Mitzvah, I was the ba'al korei and when he was called for his aliyah Eliezer would only approach the bimah if Harry would accompany him. Years later, when Harry got married he addressed the invitation to "Mr. Eliezer Gorelik and Parents. The Avrahami family is another example of people who befriended Eliezer. The father, Yossi Avrahami, and his two sons are exemplary individuals. Due to the Avrahamis, Eliezer joins the Sephardic minyan in Passaic, a project spearheaded by the Avrahamis, when it meets two Shabbatot each month. It must be noted, as a result, that Eliezer now pronounces Hebrew in the same havarah Sefardit as Mr. Avrahami himself davens. Eliezer became an assistant gabbai at Tifereth Israel. He prepares the shulchan for keriat haTorah. In addition, he removes the silver and mantel from the Torah and places them in their rightful location. Another task that he enjoys is distributing the benchers at Seudah Shelishit. It is a given that he must sit next to the rabbi at every Seudah Shelishit. Whenever Eliezer attends a Yachad Shabbaton the gabbaim will always declare, "Where is Eliezer?! He knows exactly what must be done." Every month Eliezer eagerly awaits the arrival of the shul calendar. There have been a number of occasions that he has found mistakes in the listing of the zemanim. As a result, Rabbi Cohen asks Eliezer to proofread the calendar before it is sent to the membership. My purpose in these shared lines is two fold. The first is to express a personal debt of gratitude to the rabbis and membership of a congregation that have accepted Eliezer for who he is and thereby the shul truly became a welcoming home for him. He easily could have become lost in shul and even alienated, but the congregation embraced him and as a result he has flourished. When we first arrived in Passaic we rented a condo. When we decided to finally purchase a house my wife and I immediately concurred that our home must be in the same neighborhood as the shul because of its significance in Eliezer's life. The second purpose of this article is to serve as a reminder to all of us, whether rabbis, synagogue leaders or laymen, that we must do our utmost to incorporate the developmentally disabled in our midst. For these challenged children and their parents a welcoming hand can enrich the lives of these youngsters beyond one's imagination. Many, if not most, lack a suitable yeshiva program. They do not have the opportunity to be accepted in a religious environment and, therefore, their parents are rightfully concerned about the influences in their children's schools that do not blend with the lifestyle of the rest of the family. The shul can serve as the child's virtual yeshiva. Clearly, whenever a situation arises whereby a shul setting can enhance the spiritual lives of the developmentally disabled we must be vigilant that the opportunity does not elude us. Editor's note: In a Time magazine cover story (July 15, 2002) the author noted that autistic disorders may afflict nearly 300,000 children in the United States alone. While medications can reduce some symptoms and special diets may also assist, networking with other parents can be a most helpful source in finding an appropriate course of treatment. Google "websites dealing with autistic disorders" and you will find over 100,000 sites that deal with the issues. Here, however, you have what a insightful rabbi and his successor together with a caring congregation can do to immeasurably enhance Jewish life for such children. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Therefore, for a number of weeks after Pesach, one must ascertain which stores one may purchase Chametz from. One may purchase chametz from the following Passaic-Clifton stores after Pesach: The Shoprite on Paulison; the Shoprite in Nutley; Acme; Food Basics; Stop & Shop; Costco;Target; Quick Check; CVS; Rite-Aid. Please note that while certain of these stores are national chains that are publically-owned, and therefore Chametz may be purchased from any branch of the store, there are stores which are franchised and therefore a particular store may be Jewishly owned. For example, Shoprites are franchised and therefore a specific store may be owned by a Jew, which could preclude one from purchasing Chametz there in the weeks following Pesach. When purchasing at a store outside of our community, one should check to make certain of its status. The various Kosher stores in the community sell their Chametz before Pesach (a letter from a Rabbi should be posted to confirm this), so one should be able to purchase from them without concern. Be aware that there are different views regarding Chametz She'avar Alav HaPesach, so other Rabbonim might list different guidelines.
