We are all asked to do a little more, while we all seem to have a little less. The equation just doesn't seem to add up. Many families in our community are struggling just trying to get by. For some families, making ends meet is more challenging when they don't even know where the ends are. Somaich Achim is called on to help when the financial burden and the emotional strain, often brought on by extreme difficulty, tragedy or illness, has become too great to bear. With the support of the Rabbis in the community and the tireless work of its case managers, Somaich Achim has been able to help more than fifty families this year. More than 200 of your neighbors count on Somaich Achim to help them pull through. All of the money raised goes directly to services that benefit these families, each of which is struggling to maintain their dignity in the face of financial, mental health, and family function difficulties. Thankfully, several families who have been helped in the past no longer need such help. However, many others continue to call on Somaich Achim's services. I know many of you have given already this year (or are planning to soon) and it is very appreciated. Every year we have brought in a speaker at the end of the calendar year and the feedback has been that such events are appreciated. This year (see attached flyer) we have the zchus of hearing from Rabbi Weinreb on how to instill spirituality in ourselves and our children. We prefer not to charge so that the event can be accessible to all. If you are in position to help we are looking for sponsorships which are $100 (or more). Firstly, one should keep small children away from the burning candles, and make sure that they do not light matches or candles on their own. Secondly, one should not leave one?s home while the Chanuka candles are burning. Every Chanuka, there have been tragic incidents in the Jewish community which have been caused by Chanuka candles, and Chazal warn that ?Chamira Sakanta Mei?Issura? ? danger is to be treated more stringently than Halachic prohibitions. If everyone must leave the home, the Chanuka candles can be lit either early in the evening (they must burn for a minimum of a half-hour, and should burn until at least 5:10pm), or upon return to the home later in the evening (allowing the candles to burn for at least a half-hour). After they have burned for the necessary period of time, the candles can be extinguished. If you have any questions about particular circumstances, please contact me. I wish everyone a safe and happy Chanuka! Many local Rabbonim have already publicized this important public safety issue. 1. Never ever leave a menorah or any other fire burning unattended. If you must leave your home, you can blow out the candles according to many Poskim. 2. Remove curtains or any other flammable objects from the area around the menorah. 3. Keep the menorahs away from the reach of small children and make sure the menorahs on something solid and leveled. 4. Children bring home beautiful projects on Chanukah. If they are flammable, either paste them on the wall or place them away from menorahs. 5. When making latkes, keep ALL children away from the hot oil. 6. Turn frying pan handles away from the edge of the stove and try to use the back burners. 7. House fires tend to occur more often during the winter months. Prepare an escape plan and frequently rehearse it with your family. 8. Ensure that you have working smoke alarms throughout your house. This is a good time to check the battery. 9. Make sure to always have a fully charge fire extinguisher ready. 10. In case of a fire Chas Veshalom, dial 911 AND Hatzolah at 973-472-1002 First Aid for Burns - this is for immediate care only - always call Hatzolah in the meantime at 973-472-1002. . Skin continues to burn for a while after the heat source has been removed. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to begin cooling the burn as soon as possible. A first-degree burn that is left untreated can quickly become a second or third degree burn. . Cool a burn by running cold (not freezing) water on the affected area, or by covering the area with a wet towel. When using the towel method, it is important to occasionally re-immerse the towel in cold water as the burn warms the cloth. . Burns, regardless of the cause, have to be cooled for a minimum of twenty minutes. The hotter the skin, the longer the cooling process. . It is advisable that any burn to an infant, child or the elderly that affects the face, chest, abdomen, or back should be considered an emergency. This public safety message is brought to you by Hatzolah of Passaic/Clifton EMS. Thanks to Hatzolah of Montreal and Hatzolah of Melbourne for much of the text. Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Director Emeritus of the OU will be speaking on "Instilling Spirituality in Our Children and in Ourselves in a Rapidly Changing World" at 10:30 AM at the Ahavas. Somaich Achim is currently providing assistance to more than 60 families in our midst. These people are our neighbors, and when emotional, medical or financial difficulties become too great to bear, they are fortunate to be able turn to Somaich Achim for help. In the past our community has come to their aid and the need, at this time, is great. Please make every effort this coming Sunday to attend this very necessary lecture. The details of the event are attached. -- Tizku liMitzvos, Moshe Luchins -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The program will take place on Sunday, Asarah B'teves, December 27th, 2009. The first part of the program will begin with Shacharis and that will be followed by a documentary film at 8:50. The full details are explained in the letter below. The program is open for men and women. December 17, 2009 Dear Survivor Member, With the passing of time, since that dreadful period in our history known infamously as "The Holocaust", it is incumbent upon World Jewry to ensure that future generations never forget what had taken place. It is just as important to remember those who perished and weren't even given proper or any burial. To underscore this, on behalf of Yeshiva Bais Hillel (YBH) of Passaic and The Holocaust Resource Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Clifton/ Passaic, we invite all survivors in our community to commemorate the Yom Kaddish Klalli in the Bais Medrash of YBH, at 270 Passaic Ave, second floor at 8:00 AM, Sunday the 10th of Teves, Dec. 27, 2009. The program will include morning prayers, with Kaddish recited by the next of kin of those who perished, culminating with the reading aloud of the names by Rabbis in our community. The service will conclude with the reciting of the Kail Maleh by Cantor Richard Stareshefsky. The gathered guests will then join the YBH students in viewing a documentary titled "Rescue and Neglect ", produced by Torah Umesorah, in memory of the Six Million Jews who died and in respect to the survivors. This will take place at 8:50 AM. Please join us for this memorable and inspiring program as we join in the name of unity and remembrance by young and old alike, in the honor of our holy brethren whose sacred memory will be remembered for generations to come. Let us not allow such an event to become a mere footnote in history! Looking forward to welcoming you, Sincerely yours, Rabbi Berel Leiner Principal -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've drafted a one-page summary with some basic Halachic guidelines. As is noted in the document itself, this does not cover every Halacha, opinion, or scenario, but is meant as an outline to facilitate an understanding of some basic Halachos. If you find that there is a Halacha or situation that requires clarification, please ask. Any feedback or questions are welcome.
