Message-ID: Dear All Potential Hosts/Sponsors: Thank you all for showing interest in hosting for this shabbaton or for hosting in the past. I have to say, running these shabbatonim as often as I do, and seeing the wonderful bonds formed between the participants and those who open their homes to them, is absolutely inspirational. Inviting this population into your community is an absolute chessed and proves uplifting and rewarding to the community and participants alike. From experience, after the first shabbaton, the communities tend to consistently invite us back. On behalf of HASC, Tizku L?Mitzvos! I would like to clarify some points that seem to be asked by many of you. In addition, I would like to explain what the shabbaton plans are and what is needed in terms of hosting. Lastly, I would please ask that each of you reply at your earliest convenience to confirm hosting availability, now having all this information. This shabbaton is open specifically to our adult population living in our over 30 group residences in Brooklyn. The purpose of this shabbaton is mainly to give these people the ability to get out and away for a Shabbos. Many of them rarely leave the residence for Shabbos and even more rarely leave Brooklyn, unlike those who live at home or children involved in youth programming. It is a breath of fresh air to just get away. Additionally, it exposes them to other communities and promotes integration into general society. Lastly, it opens the communities up to this population, through exposure, and helps us get rid of typical stereotypes associated with people with disabilities. Of course, we understand full well the burden this could place on a community as well. Therefore, we closely monitor who we send to such programming and assure they are appropriate. Those who sign up and participate are only a small fraction of the entire population we service. We open this programming up only to the highest functioning, with no major physical or behavioral issues that cannot be maintained in such an environment. We do not send major dietary restrictions (with maybe the exception of a diabetic or two), wheelchair participants, major behavioral issues, physical illness or injuries, bed wetters, etc. You can rest assured that rarely is there an issue that arises because of these limits on participation. We also send along appropriate and properly trained staff. All staff members are the regular Shabbos residential staff. They all know the participants they are caring for and know how to work with them. No group of participants are sent without a counselor and there is one counselor based in each host house. I am sure you will find that the staff are professional and well trained. It is the responsibility of the staff to monitor food intake, administer medications where needed and to guide the participants and assure a good time. I, as the representative of the administration at HASC, will personally be in attendance with my family as well. Although I don?t anticipate any, concerns and issues could be brought directly to me and will be addressed. That being said, the way the shabbaton works is that the participants arrive by agency vans on Friday afternoon, approximately an hour or so before Shabbos. They come fully showered and prepared for Shabbos. They daven with the shul and then will have a communal supper together in shul. After supper, they will return to the hosts for sleeping. In the morning is shachris, followed by lunch with hosts. There is then some menucha time and then they head to a host sponsor for an oneg, singing, divrei Torah and games. Depending on availability, there is sometimes an afternoon activity in the shul before mincha. Mincha is in the shul followed by shalosh seudos (which is open to the community to attend as well) in the shul. Maariv is davened and then they return to the host for Havdalah and packing up. They then meet at the location for the Melava Malka where they have a good time before returning to Brooklyn. All of this being said, we need hosting for both Shabbos Lunch and Sleeping Friday night. From experience, most hosts can usually do both but sometimes there are those who cannot so we match up hosts for sleeping and eating in separate locations. Also, based on logistics, like having authorized people administering medications, it is important that most hosts live as close as possible to each other and the shul. We can make exceptions to this rule (if someone lives more than a half mile from shul), if logistics allow and there are no other local choices. In addition, being that we have a counselor at each host, we usually need a host to house between 2 and 4 including the counselor. Most hosts usually have 3 (one counselor and two participants) but more and less are needed as well. They do not need to be in the same room, since most are independent. The counselor will coordinate who sleeps with who. Please, at your earliest convenience, get back to me if you are able to host with the final number of how many you could host and if you can include Shabbos lunch. Also, please include your address and phone number so I can map it and make all the lists for the staff. If you have any local friends or family who may be interested in hosting, please feel free to forward this email to them, since we are still in need of quite a few hosts and it is getting close. Lastly, there are always those who are unable to host for various reasons, but would like to get involved in some way as well. Or there are those who want to help out in various ways. For anybody who fits into those categories, we appreciate help with off shooting the costs. All expenses of the shabbaton are charged directly to the participants. The participants are responsible to pay for all recreational activities and most personal expenses from their own pockets, of which this is one. In addition, most live on very limited incomes, many collecting government benefits only. What they are charged is determined by the cost and funds collected. All donations/sponsorships are tax deductible and we can provide a receipt by request. All collected funds go strictly to this program. In the event we collect more funds then expenses (which to this date has never occurred), I put the money aside for future shabbatonim. To assure this, the money has to go directly through me. If you know of anyone interested in sponsorships, please ask them to contact me as well. Wishing you and your family well and again Tizku L?Mitzvos! Simchas Torah is almost upon us! We look forward to a fun, enjoyable chag at the Tif with you and your family. It is the minhag ha'olam to receive an aliyah on this momentous yom tov. The shul would like to remind parents of boys ages 9 to 12 that your sons are also allowed to be called to the Torah to receive individual aliyos after hakofos on Simchas Torah day. There are few greater joys for the young men of the household than being allowed to participate in the mitzvah of Aliya LaTorah. Parents may also bask in the nachas of watching their little ones take their next steps towards being a bar mitzvah. The Rav and the shul invite parents to participate in this wonderful tradition. In anticipation of this event, we invite boys, ages 9 to 12, to learn how to recite the Birchas HaTorah with the traditional Yomim Nora'im niggun (tune.) _Our esteemed Baal Koreh, Yitz Weiss, will be conducting a class on Shabbos-Shemini Atzeres at 5:15 (45 minutes before mincha) in the Davy Streit Boardroom downstairs at the Tif in teaching the boys the proper decorum and niggun_. Rabbi Cohen will also be addressing the boys briefly on the importance of and proper kavana for this mitzvah. Fathers are invited to bring their eligible sons to this session to prepare for an aliyah on the following day. Boys younger than 9 are also welcome to come and learn, although shul policy is for them not to have aliyos. (Bar Mitzvah boys of all ages may also attend.) Refreshments will be served. *REMINDER: Davening Simchas Torah morning starts at 8:00AM** * -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Children are of course welcome and encouraged to come to shul to daven and participate in the Hakafos but at the same time each parent must be responsible and not have their children running around shul unsupervised. Your children should be sitting by your side during davening; not running around outside the shul, not climbing on the stage, trees or banisters, not jumping off the steps, not being loud in the lobby, not running in and out of shul while the Rav is speaking; if they cannot then please consider leaving them at home or having them come to shul later. Tifereth is known to be a child-friendly shul but that does not mean we are a drop-off babysitting service where you can come to shul with your children say good-bye and then pick them up at the end of davening but have no idea where they are or what they are doing during davening. On Yom Kippur I made multiple announcements about children running around the shul (some being destructive) only to be ignored by the very parents whose children were disturbing the davening. If you are unsure and can't say for certain that your children are not being disruptive, it means that you don't know what they are doing in shul. I have held myself back from approaching these parents directly in the hopes that they will realize themselves, but that will need to be the next step if the issue is not resolved. Feel free to ask me if perhaps your children have been disturbing davening. Please be aware that this Sunday, a neighbor of the Shul will be hosting an outdoor event. As Sunday is Simchas Torah, and there will be many children in shul, parents should be extra mindful of where their children are, and paying special attention to ensure that they are not running around outside the shul disturbing the neighbors or making a Chilul Hashem.
