The burglars are coming in the sliding doors during the night when the residents are sleeping. There were two last night. It is easy to open a sliding door - all you need do is lift it and slide it. The lock will move off the locking mechanism and the door will open. To prevent this go to Home Depot and buy a round closet pole and ask them to cut it for you the length of your door. Then place the bar in the track to prevent your door from opening. In addition, there are a couple of other scams to which we are being alerted. Here's an update: BREAK INS: 1. Break ins are not just the back sliding doors. In one case they climbed upon stacked Sukkah boards, entered via a high-up open window and stole computers and jewelry. In two other cases they climbed up a deck that was on the second floor. In another case they entered the home on Shabbos day when the man was napping on the couch and stole a laptop. In another house they entered during the blackout before Pesach. 2. Break ins are widespread throughout the community and not limited to one area. They seem to know the habits of our community, that we nap on Shabbos, that we are in shul during the morning, that we may turn alarms off during Shabbos. And they are brazen enough to come in at night while we are sleeping. 3. Be on the lookout for any suspicious activity in the community. When you are out at night and you see ANYTHING suspicious, call the police. Lakewood has had similar issues, and started a community watch group, and I understand that they caught three burglars. Consider an alarm system if you don't have one. We are having one installed that will monitor our doors and windows and will call us within 15 seconds and if we don't reply or don't reply correctly they place a call to the police immediately. Don't fall for the door-to-door scam of somebody trying to sell security systems (see below). SCAMS: 1. Utility Company. Somebody reported to me that somebody came to their door claiming to be from a utility company and wanted to save them money over PSE&G. He didn't respond, but didn't think anything of incident. It's a scam! In one townhouse community they checked all meters and cased the place for burglary (they were caught on camera). Be aware of anyone claiming to be an inspector from your local utility company. This individual may claim to be conducting a routine inspection and may request to see your fuse box, furnace, or water meter. Upon 'inspection', this person informs you that a number of regulations are being violated and that certain repairs are necessary to ensure continuance of your water, gas or electricity. The inspector then gives you the name of someone who is able to do the job on short notice at a reasonable price. In actual fact, there is nothing wrong with your utilities and the inspector and the friend will split any profit from your 'repairs.' 2. Census takers. You should have received and filled out (and returned) your census form for 2010. Don't be fooled by anybody coming to the door representing the Census. Ask to see, and examine carefully identification. And NEVER give your social security number. It is not part of the Census form, although it may ask for your last four number, which is OK. If your form does ask for social security number, rip it up. It's a fake (although there has not been any reporting of fake forms being mailed). Be aware that there can be more than one Census form. Names of some of the genuine surveys include "The American Housing Survey," the "Current Population Survey," the "Housing Vacancy Survey' and the "National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation." A more detailed, although apparently not complete, list can be found at the Census Bureau's web site. 3. Security systems. As word gets out about security issues a new breed of criminal appears on your doorstep - one selling security systems. The scam is they will offer you a great deal if you put their sign outside. They then sell inferior equipment and an ongoing monitoring service that is costly and may not do what they claim (or what the contract says, as most people don't read the fine print). Don't fall for the scam. Only use a reliable company or one recommended by somebody that you know. Needless to say your safety is our main concern. Be careful. Have a good Shabbos. The issues naturally have many of us very concerned and this is only reflective of the deep love that we all have for our Shul, our spiritual home. There is no doubt that some misinformation has been circulating, which has been fueled, in part, by a lack of clear articulation and engagement by all concerned parties. To more comprehensively explore ALL possible options of action, we are putting together a NEW timetable and will seek to inform you better of the financial and membership challenges that the Shul faces, to be followed by constructive suggestions and a vote on solution proposals. The general membership meetings that had been scheduled for April 18th and 25th are accordingly postponed and the new timetable will be made available shortly. Baruch Hashem, Tifereth Israel has many congregants who share divergent expertise that can help us chart a viable and thriving path for the future. Now more than ever we seek constructive ideas and suggestions - which can then be measured and evaluated in healthy discourse. It is incumbent upon all who cherish and value what makes Tifereth Israel unique to step up and contribute to this process. While the need for collective action is urgent, the desire for shalom is paramount. This thorough and inclusive process will draw us -a congregation whose very oxygen is embracing Ahavas Yisrael- closer and ensure the future well being of our beloved Shul. The meeting will start at 8:30p.m. The primary topic of discussion will be the planning of the Sisterhood Clothing Boutique. Through the generosity of the community at large and our members, we have been fortunate to collect a significant amount of used clothes in good condition. We intend to use the proceeds of this event to benefit the shul as a whole and really need as many volunteers to help coordinate, what we hope to be a very successful event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nicole directly at 973-953-7892. _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. Here's a note from one of the victims: "Last night our home was burglarized as the thug climbed in through my daughter's bedroom window and stole her laptop which was right next to her as she lay asleep. I was upstairs sleeping. He then went through her wallet and took $180 cash. This happened at 2am on Brook between Elmwood and Dwasline. Tell all to lock up doors & windows and keep lights on...Thank G-d no one was hurt...." "FYI, just found out that our neighbors across the street - were also robbed about an hour earlier.." Folks, I cannot emphasize enough to take all the security precautions you can to safeguard you family and your home. As stated above, lock up your doors and windows and keep lights on. The last three came in through slightly open windows. In our house we have installed an alarm with 24-hour monitoring and we have two dogs. Call the police if you see anything suspicious around your neighborhood. The basis for this ruling is that if people get haircuts and shave the day after Shabbos, it appears as a slight to the Kavod of Shabbos, as the obligation to make oneself as dignified and presentable as possible is considered the essence of Kavod Shabbos. This Halacha should remind us of the obligation to give proper Kavod to Shabbos in our preparations for Shabbos, as well as in the way that we dress and act on Shabbos itself. This Sefer is a unique work which has become a contemporary classic, learned by and impacting upon Jews throughout the world. I am copying below a review of the Sefer by Rabbi Yaakov Feldman, so that you can have an impression of the special character and focus of the Sefer. Jonathan Gudema will be leading the Chabura, which will take place in the Bais Medrash. You can contact him jgudema at gmail.com for further information. I encourage you to participate in this Chabura; everyone who does will gain tremendously. Bivracha, Rabbi Cohen Mapping Out the Bilvavi Mishkan Evneh Seforim by Rabbi Yaakov Feldman We know his name by now, but he doesn?t cite it in his many books (nor does he include a copyright). And the phone number listed on the inside-cover of all the works for more information isn?t his, but rather a student?s. But those are just a few of the captivating things about the author of the now voluminous series of seforim that (almost) all go by the name of Bilvavi Mishkan Evneh. To my mind among the many other wonderful things that the author has done was to ?introduce? the Ribbono Shel Olam into contemporary Jewish conversation and to re-introduce Him to more advanced learners, as we?ll explain below. Let?s start off with some facts, though, like the Bilvavi?s published works and their contents. The most popular of his works is the Bilvavi Mishkan Evneh series, numbers 1 through 10. These are the works that introduce the Ribbono Shel Olam into the conversation that I spoke of above. The first of the series details how to draw His Presence into your day-to-day life; and the others expand upon that idea and introduce us to notions that, while familiar to enthusiasts of Mussar and Chassidic works, are often unexplored by otherwise fine and fully-observant Jews, like loving and revering Hashem, serving Him wholeheartedly, humbling yourself in His presence, and more. The tenth in the series is actually a republishing of an earlier work known as Kol Demamah Dakah. It?s very erudite and concentrates on some astounding gematrios, allusions to things in pasukim that we wouldn?t have thought of, the significance of certain contemporary phenomenon, and then some. It was actually the first of his works that I came across. I live in the Monsey area, so as you might imagine, I have the luxury of browsing several excellent seforim stores, as I often do. I was struck by Kol Demamah Dakah the first time I came across it, but for one reason or another I just decided not to buy it. I came upon it again a couple of weeks later, perhaps at another store, picked it up again to look it over, and did the same -- though I was captivated. When I came upon it a third time and delved into it I was hooked. It?s utterly original -- which is true of everything written by the author -- and as soon as I sat down with it at home I was convinced I wanted to follow this author. I came upon numbers 1 and 2 and was delighted with them, and etcetera. Then I was privileged and delighted to discover the Bilvavi?s more esoteric works including Lahav Aish (Baal Shem Tov v?Talmidav), Sefer HaEmunah (which is largely unknown), his comments on Sefer Baal Shem Tov, on the Parshios and the Moadim, and his Toras Remez. As if that wasn?t enough, the Rav has also begun series of works that serve as comments to the Ari?s Eitz Chaim, on Hakdamas Rechovos HaNahar (an exceedingly recondite work by the Rashas), on Ramchal?s Klach Pischei Chochma and his Derech Hashem, and on Rav Yitzchak Ayzik Chaver?s Pischei Shaarim. And He has also started a phenomenal series of works termed Da Es Atzmecha (translated as ?Know Thyself?, as the expression goes) which is touted as being ?For the Thinking Person? right on the cover, which it certainly is. As I said, these more advanced works manage to re-introduce the Ribbono Shel Olam to advanced learners. For while they may delve into Kabbalah seforim for the best of reasons, they may have forgotten Him in the process, since it?s easy to get lost in the minutia of the glorious details of Kabbalah and to forget the Source of it all. The Bilvavi gets that. And he?s sure to set his readers back on course again and again throughout his comments upon the Kabbalistic minutia, which I very much admire. But let?s put it another way. Now, as anyone who has ever seen his videos at http://www.bilvavi.net/ can see, the Bilvavi is only in his mid-thirties, which is both frustrating to us older folks who are frankly envious of his genius at such a young age, and is exceedingly encouraging for the Jewish future. His relative youth has been noted in an earlier haskama from Rav Deblitzky of Bnei Brak. In fact, many may wonder how so young a person could have such a deep and wide view of some of the greatest secrets of the Torah, but I believe the Rav himself explained it in his comments to Derech Hashem. He wrote there (on p. 29 of the first volume) that the great Sfas Emes had been made a Rebbe at age 26, and was asked how he managed to garner such great wisdom and insight at such a young age. He replied with a mashal. It would be as if a mountain-climber who worked for years to gather a team together, to get in shape for the awesome ordeal, and to do everything he had to do for so long, then reached the mountaintop -- and came upon a kid there. ?How did you ever get here at your age?? asked the mountain-climber. ?It?s simple,? said the child. ?While some have to expend the effort to reach the mountaintop, others are born and raised on it.? We don?t know much about the Bilvavi?s background (though it?s clear from the progression of his works and citations that he started off with a Yeshivish background and only later came upon Chassidus and Kabbalah), we nonetheless know that he came from extraordinary roots and was born to do his holy work. At bottom I?d say that everything that the author touches turns to wisdom, and he?s always original and very, very deep! May the Ribbono Shel Olam grant him a long and productive life, and may we be zoche to draw from his Torah for many years! Rabbi Yaakov Feldman has authored several number of books and has been offering weekly e-mail classes for http://www.torah.org/ for years that are subscribed to by thousands of readers. His latest sefer- a translation and commentary to Rambam's The Eight Chapters will appear later this year (Targum Press). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Somebody pushed in the air conditioner, climbed in through the hole and stole the usual items ? laptop and money. It was on the far end of the Passaic side of the community between Passaic and Pennington. Gary Schaer has been contacted and he said he had a call scheduled with the chief of police but I hadn?t heard anything further. As soon as I do I will let you know. A number of you have sent e-mails indicating you want to volunteer for a community watch (Shomrim) organization, which apparently had been in operation a number of years ago. I cannot get involved in such an organization, due to my duties with Hatzolah. However I would be more than willing to continue as the communication center for the community, sending out communiqu?s as I have been doing, and assisting the start of the organization by getting people together. So, If you are interested, send me an e-mail, and I will accumulate them all and send a mailing to all and you then decide on the details of the organization. As soon as you then have a contact person, I will let the community know. We may have contacts from such organizations in other communities that we can share with you who can help get started. If anybody knows of somebody who should be part of this community list, let me know. Let?s hope this gets resolved soon!
