At the same time, we reflect upon the incredible faith and courage demonstrated by Jews in the most difficult of times, in which they fulfilled the commandment of loving Hashem with all of one's soul -- putting commitment to Hashem and Torah before life itself. In line with these themes, I am giving a number of short Shiurim based on the Sefer "She'eilos U'Teshuvos Mi'maamakim". This unique and awe-inspiring Sefer was written by Rabbi Ephraim Oshry, who was a Rav and Poseik in the Kovno Ghetto in the early 1940's. In those days of darkness, terror, and death, the Jews of the ghetto sought to adhere to the Mitzvos with exceeding care and sacrifice, knowing that they could thereby realize a spiritual victory over the Nazis. Faced often with dilemnas of life and death and other heartbreaking questions that arose from tragedy, they often turned to Rabbi Oshry for his rulings. Can a father say Kaddish for a murdered child? Can a 12-year old boy who may not survive to his Bar Mitzvah put on Tefillin? The context for the questions, the questions themselves, and the answers, give us a unique first-hand account of the horrors of the Holocaust, and open a window for us to glimpse Jews who transcended their personal pain and suffering to achieve a depth of devotion to Hashem that is difficult to fathom, but should uplift and inspire us. The volumes are difficult to purchase and very expensive, but someone who would like to see the Teshuvos inside can go to Hebrewbooks.org, where they are available. *Listen to the Shiur exclusively on TifTorah at http://www.tiftorah.org/oshry.* (You may also follow instructions to subscribe to the shiur on your iPod or iPhone through the iTunes store by clicking on the button when it becomes available.) [http://www.kashrut.com/Alerts/benedril.jpg]McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., Fort Washington, PA is recalling 21 lots of over-the-counter medicines. The lots involved, listed below, are sold in the United States, Fiji, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and Jamaica. This action is a follow-up to a product recall that McNeil Consumer Healthcare originally announced on January 15, 2010, which was initiated following consumer complaints of a musty or moldy odor, which has been linked to the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA). The risk of serious adverse medical events is remote. This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These lots are being added to the list of recalled products as a precautionary measure after a continuing internal review determined that some packaging materials used in the lots had been shipped and stored on the same type of wooden pallet that was tied to the presence of TBA in earlier recalled lots. All lots involved in the recall were produced before the January 15, 2010 recall, after which McNeil stopped accepting shipments of materials from its suppliers on that type of pallet. Consumers who purchased product from the lots included in this recall should stop using the product and contact McNeil Consumer Healthcare for instructions on a refund or replacement. For these instructions, and information regarding how to return or dispose of the product, consumers should log on to the internet at www.mcneilproductrecall.com9 or call 1-888-222-6036 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time). Consumers who have medical concerns or questions should contact their healthcare provider. Any adverse reactions may also be reported to the FDA's MedWatch Program by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178, by mail at MedWatch, HF-2, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787, or on the MedWatch website at www.fda.gov/safety/medwatch/default.htm.10 The product lot numbers for the recalled products can be found on the side of the bottle label. The following are pertinent Halachos relating to Tisha B?Av: ? * The final meal before Tisha B?Av is called the Seudah Mafsekes. Its Halachos are intended to create an atmosphere of mourning even before Tisha B?Av begins. * The custom is to sit on the ground, but one does not have to remove one?s shoes. * One may only eat only one cooked food at this meal. The custom is to eat a simple meal consisting of bread, hard-boiled eggs, and water. Preferably, one should dip some of the bread in a small amount of ashes, and say ?This is the Tisha B?Av meal?. * One should not recite Bircas HaMazon with a zimun. If there are three men present, it is preferable that they do not eat the meal together (to avoid the zimun obligation). * After the Seuda Mafsekes, one may continue to eat and drink until sunset, unless one firmly decided to begin the fast. * Clearly, the Seuda Mafsekes does not suffice to prepare for the Tisha B?Av fast. A more substantial meal is required. In order to allow for these two meals to take place in relatively close succession, the custom is to eat a regular, full meal (leaving some room for the Seuda Mafsekes), daven Mincha, and then eat the Seuda Mafsekes. Those who are not able to use Mincha to separate the two meals should make sure to have a substantial break before beginning the Seuda Mafsekes. * We will daven Mincha at 7:15pm. All the prohibitions of Tisha B?Av begin at 8:24pm. Maariv will begin at 9:00pm, followed by Eicha. * Nursing and pregnant women are obligated to fast on Tisha B?Av, barring extenuating circumstances. For this reason, it is important to prepare properly for the fast to ensure that one can fast. For example, a nursing mother should prepare formula or her own milk in order to ensure that the infant has sufficient nutrition during and after Tisha B?Av. As well, nursing and pregnant women should arrange their Tisha B?Av in a fashion that allows them to rest and conserve energy. In special circumstances, a nursing or pregnant woman may be allowed to eat and drink; a Rabbi should be consulted. As well, any person who is actually ill (this does not include weakness, mild headaches, etc., that often accompany fasting) is exempt from fasting. [A woman who gave birth within 30 days before Tisha B?Av should consult a Rabbi.] * Children under Bar/Bas Mitzva are not obligated to fast the entire day. * One is permitted to swallow capsules or bitter medicine tablets without water. * Washing for pleasure is prohibited, but one may wash a part of the body which has become dirty. Even for Netilas Yadayim in the morning, one may only wash until the end of one?s fingers. An individual who soils one?s hands when preparing food may wash off the residue. * Marital relations and application of creams, oils, perfume etc. onto one?s body is prohibited. [It is permitted to apply medication and to use deodorant.] * One may not wear shoes that have any leather or suede on them. * One should not greet people on Tisha B?Av (e.g. ?how are you?, ?good morning?, ?hello?). * One should not sit on a chair more than 12 inches high. This prohibition ends at midday (1:03pm). * One should try to spend as much time as possible focusing on the mourning for the Bais HaMikdash. One should definitely try to defer work until after midday, when possible. * The times for Shacharis, Mincha, and Maariv are on the Shul calendar. The fast concludes at 9:04pm. * Some of the Halachos of mourning extend until midday of the tenth of Av, because the Bais HaMikdash burned throughout that day. For example, one should refrain from haircuts, washing clothes, and listening to music during this time. Under extenuating circumstances (such as leaving for a trip the day after Tisha B?Av), one should ask a Rav for guidance. ? May we soon merit celebrating the day of Tisha B?Av as a Mo?ed, with the building of the Third Bais HaMikdash!
