Once again, we are proud to offer free health screenings and opportunities to speak with health professionals in various fields of specialty. Whether you want to check out a funny looking spot on your tooth, get tested for diabetes or have your child's hearing or vision checked, our health fair is the place to be. Our fair will showcase more than 40 exciting and informative booths, filled with information about every aspect of health and safety you can imagine. Want sound advice about vitamins? Treatment for addictions? CPR basics? Home security systems? Weight loss and nutrition? Cleaning products? Fire prevention? It's all there - under one roof -and all free of charge. Get your taste buds ready for Atara Weisberger's 4:00 PM workshop entitled, "Healthy Food Choices Your Kids Will Love". You will enjoy recipe handouts, tips, and free samples -YUM! And get your creative juices flowing with Abbey Wolin, from Little Masters Art Studio, who will join us to conduct health and safety themed arts and crafts workshops for children at 1:30 and 2:00 PM. We are also proud to present internationally acclaimed speaker Rabbi Eli Glaser CNWC, Founder and Director of SOVEYA, who will conduct a workshop at 1:30 PM entitled, "A Torah Response to the Obesity Epidemic in the Jewish Community." He will address the causes of and solutions to this problem for both children and adults. Seriously folks, this is one event you will not want to miss! There will be tons of take- home items like balloons and safety themed coloring books, the brand new Bikur Cholim cookbooks will be available for purchase and there will even be a limited supply of free smoke-detectors, bicycle helmets for only $5 each and gift card give-aways to local merchants. But most importantly, you might learn something that could save a life. URL: From alevin at tendertouch.com Fri Jun 4 12:25:57 2010 From: alevin at tendertouch.com (Amitai Levin) Date: Fri, 4 Jun 2010 13:25:57 -0400 Subject: [Tif-mail] Parsha Message from Rabbi Cohen Message-ID: I'm away this Shabbos, but given the events of the past week, I'd like to leave you with some thoughts that relate to the Parsha. All of us have been dismayed by widespread condemnation and criticism of Israel for its interception of the flotilla attempting to breach Israel's blockade of Gaza. While the world's hypocrisy and double-standard is blatant and unambiguous (as per the world's reaction to Israel's evacuation of Gush Katif, and their responses to the murderous shelling of Israeli cities and Israel's reaction, Operation Cast Lead), it still provokes a sense of outrage - as it should. Numbing oneself to hatred disguised as righteousness, and silently acquiescing to the inversion of right and wrong, perpetrator and victim - can never be allowed or justified. I would like to highlight a couple of relevant points from this week's Parsha that are worthy of reflection. The Ramban writes that the spies, upon their return from Eretz Yisrael, initially told the truth and provided the factual information that they were asked about. However, they quickly offered unsolicited opinion, arguing that Klal Yisrael would not be able to vanquish the inhabitants of the land. When Yehoshua and Kalev contested their point of view and insisted that Hashem would enable them to overcome all their enemies, and managed to persuade many of the people that this was true, the spies took the next brazen step. They fabricated allegations about Eretz Yisrael, the absolute falsehood ("sheker gamur" - Ramban 14:37) that the Land consumes its inhabitants. Their deception was bold, shameless, and therefore successful. At this point, a sense of despair and fear was unleashed amongst the Jewish People, and as we know, the weeping of that night would haunt us throughout history. The story resonates today. When faced with those who have no moral standards and no compunction against fabricating utter falsehoods, it is truly difficult to convince people of the truth. It is a form of asymmetrical warfare; one side is bound by facts and truth, while the other is bent on depicting a narrative to their liking, unhindered by accuracy or reality. No wonder that today, like in the time of the spies, those who champion the truth find themselves on the defensive. We must remember that ultimately, the truth will prevail and falsehood will collapse, and we need to defend the truth - and the People of Israel - tenaciously. A second lesson is to be found in the Pasuk which describes the reward that Calev received "Eikev haisa ruach acheres imo" (14:24) - because he had a different spirit within him". Rabbi Simcha Zissel Broide explains that the word "ruach" literally means wind, and the verse is explaining that the most impressive and laudatory aspect of Yehoshua and Calev's opposition to the ten spies was their resistance to the prevailing "winds", the atmosphere and attitude and mindset which permeated and poisoned the discourse. This "ruach" swept up the ten spies and then the Jewish People as a whole. When one is confronted with a widespread and popular set of beliefs or values, it is very difficult - more difficult than we care to admit - to maintain a "ruach acheres", not budging from the truths that one holds dear. When one is faced with international condemnation of atrocities by Israeli soldiers, one sometimes can be swept up by the mainstream current, and left wondering how so many can be so wrong, and so few can be so right. Let's not forget that we still suffer from the ongoing tragedies that are a consequence of the sin of the spies, when all so many were so terribly wrong, and the few, overwhelmingly outnumbered, gave voice to the truth that could not be altered or compromised. Last Thursday evening, June 3rd, the board and interested members of our shul met to discuss myriad proposals and ideas pertaining to this issue. This meeting was a lively and productive one lasting well into the night in which many ideas were vetted and discussed. Following up on this substantive meeting, the board met this past Sunday night June 6th to review what was discussed at the Thursday meeting. As an outcome of the meeting, the board decided that at the current time our shul should focus on first increasing the programming we provide with events, Shabbatons, scholar-in-residence programs, etc. These programs define and unite us as a kehilla. This decision is obvious and does not require the tedium of a general membership informational meeting or vote. Regarding the proposals for changing the structure of the shul, the board decided that the ideas presented were not yet ready to warrant a presentation to the general membership at the present time and as such there will not be a general membership meeting on June 13th or June 20th. This does not in any way impugn on the validity of any of the proposals, only that we felt it was our directorial and fiduciary responsibility to be fully prepared before embarking on any major financial undertaking. The fact is that capital improvements to our aging shul building are an eventual necessity. At such time that the board feels that the plans proposed meet the necessary criteria, the board will present those plans to the general membership to be voted upon. For the time being, we will focus on our shul's growth through other methods -such as increased programming. More than ever, the Tifereth needs the active participation of its members in creating and assisting with bringing the new programs and ideas to fruition. If you are willing and able to assist in any way, please contact the shul office to offer your services and support. We are continuing to solicit your original ideas on how to make our shul a force of strength and growth in our community. As a reminder, there will be a general membership meeting on Sunday June 27th at 8:00pm to vote on the slate for the upcoming year. The proposed slate for next year which has already been approved by the Board of Directors is as follows: President - Pinny Milchman 1st VP - Yaakov Ochs 2nd VP - Boruch Spivak Treasurer - Gavi Giloni Financial Secretary - Rabbi Steven Lacob Recording Secretary - Mordechi Bodek Counsel - Louis Chapman Directors David Adler Shmuel Avrahami Michael Bennett Neal Frolich Chaim Grinspan Russell Kelner Rabbi Jonathan Krimsky Shlomo Levy Marc Nash David Shlachter Trustees Nate Block Eli Dahan Marty Goldberg Issac Kupferman Dr. Todd Mehlman Lenard Persin Dr. Eugene Schwab, M.D. Aaron Strum Yitz Weiss Gabayim Yosef Avrahami Aviad Oded Rabbi David Sheer Rabbi Shlomo Weissmann Thank you Board of Directors -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There are many children who have been deprived of vital - state mandated - services, as well as many therapists in our community who have either lost their job or stand to lose their job as a direct result of the Passaic Board of Education. On Monday, June 21 at 7PM, there will be a board meeting to discuss the future contracts of many occupational, speech, behavioral, and physical therapists. This will directly affect the services to many of our community's children. These children have thrived under their current caregivers. During these trying economic times, we also must do whatever we can to help each other. We are not asking for money, but we are asking that you attend the board meeting at the Board of Ed building 101 Passaic Ave., Passaic, NJ 07055 on Monday night. Your support is invaluable. It is also vital to let our councilmen know that we are greatly concerned about protecting our community's children's welfare and our adults' livelihood.
