For the past 12 years I have been able to collect the required amounts for the number of people in our community in need of GROCERIES AND MONIES needed to make Pesach. This was accomplished by reaching a group of approximately 70 people in town who covered the entire budget. This year however, due to the economic downturn we are having a difficult time raising the required funds. Additionally we've added 30 families this week alone to the growing list of people in need of this Pesach assistance. After extensive discussion, the Board of Directors recommended that we go forward with this presentation to the Members. To allow the membership a full understanding of the backdrop and goals of these proposals, there will be several public informational forums. At a meeting on Motzei Shabbos, March 27, 2010 from 9:00-10:00 pm, Rabbi Cohen and I will discuss why these changes are critical to the Shul at this time in light of the crisis the Shul is currently experiencing. In order that the meeting not go long and take up too much of Members' time right before Pesach, please email any questions to me at amilevin at optonline.com and the Rav and I will try to address them at the meeting. If you are unable to attend in-person, the meeting will be recorded and available on the Shul's website. Another, more detailed meeting will take place on Sunday, April 18, 2010 in which the specifics of the proposals will be presented in a more thorough fashion. Additionally, a series of small group meetings can be setup at Members' homes to continue the discussion in a more informal manner. Following these informational sessions and discussions, there will be a Special Membership Meeting on Sunday April 25, 2010 at 9:30 am to vote on allowing the Board of Directors to make the proposed structural changes. All Members that are in good standing are encouraged to attend and vote In brief, the improvements will include: * Paving the parking lot * Restructuring the Main Sanctuary to change the seating such that the Congregation will face the front of the Shul * Updating and refreshing the look of the Ballroom As of the date of this letter, more than $35,000 has been pledged towards these renovations and it should be noted that the entire cost will be paid for by special donations, no money from the Shul's operating budget will be used. As noted, these improvements have been considered by the Shul's Board of Directors who recommended that we go forward with this presentation to the Members. Additionally, the Executive Committee of the Shul's Board of Directors unanimously recommends that you consider these vital improvements and vote in favor of them for the following reasons: * To continue to build on the growth in the spiritual atmosphere of the Shul that recently included the renovation of the downstairs Beis Medrash, and the added minyanim on Shabbos and weekdays * To provide improved facilities for members, whether for simchas or daily attendance at Shul * To attract new members to the Shul with whom we can continue to grow and share why all Members feel so passionately that the Tifereth Israel is a unique, warm, family-friendly and welcoming Shul. A Committee has been formed and tasked with determining how best to make these renovations. This Committee is intentionally broad-based, comprising men and women, and long-standing members and newer members. What each person on the Committee shares, with you, is to see Tifereth Israel build on its past successes, Boruch HaShem, and continue to be a vibrant community Shul that propels its Members' growth in Torah, Tefilla and Chesed.
