The thief tried coming in through a kitchen casement window at 3:30 AM, knocked over a washing cup and woke the homeowners who called 911. It also appears as if they also tried to push in the air conditioner to crawl through that hole. And the homeowners had lights on in the adjacent room. The 911 call was responded to in 15 minutes, and the police did some investigating, including dusting for fingerprints. What is troubling is the casement window (see picture below). All reports indicate that casement windows are safe, in that they crank out making it difficult to open. When I spoke to the homeowner she said the window was closed, which means somebody, somehow pried open the window and almost got in. Folks, I can?t emphasize enough the need for safety. The fear is there will be violence in one of these break ins. Some community members are trying to organize a community watch (shomrin). If you are interested in joining, let me know and I?ll forward to the group (they haven?t set up a focal point yet). Most of these burglaries are at night (from 1:00 AM on). Two that I know were during the day on Shabbos. Right now I reach close to 700 families with these communiqu?s plus the shul lists. If you know of somebody who should be receiving these alerts, tell them to send me an e-mail, http://images.meredith.com/diy/images/2009/01/p_SDW_012_01.jpg Regards, George Matyjewicz, PhD., Principal GAP Enterprises, LLC http://www.gapent.com/ "Strategy with a personal touch" 81 Pine Brae, Suite 1B Clifton, NJ 07012 (NYC metro) Tel: (973) 777-1053 Mobile: (551) 655-2000 mailto:georgem at gapent.com P Think before you print -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The usual points of entry - doors and windows and the usual theft items - laptops and cash. The police report that six burglars have been caught, but there seems to be more at large. The police have stepped up surveillance in both marked and unmarked cars, per Gary Schaer who has spoken to the Police Chief. I asked if he could arrange a meeting with the Police Chief to guide the community on safety and bring us up-to-date with efforts. A community watch program is being organized. Josh Schwager has taken on the leadership role. If you are interested in joining and can provide some time to help, click here to send an e-mail. Needless to say this is a difficult task as the breakins are happening from 1:00 AM on and are sporadic throughout the community. And it will need to be coordinated with the police. Needless to say, you need to take the proper safeguards every night. Just as you have a checklist of things to be done before Shabbos (e.g., light in refrigerator, blech, water pot, etc), so too must you have a checklist of things to be done every night before you go to bed, e.g., lock all windows and doors, bar in sliding door track, alarm on, etc. As I get updates I will pass them on to you. Call the police or 911 if you see any suspicious activity around your house or your neighbors. The community watch program has been launched and is named "Shomrim Volunteer Guardians of Greater Passaic/Clifton." The organization has received support from HaRav Shmuel Kamenetsky and local Rabbonim who will offer necessary guidance on the functioning and direction of the organization. The Shomrim group is working in tandem with local police, politicians, and various community leaders to best serve all of the security-related needs of the community. Please note, this is not a vigilante militia. Rather, this is a Shomrim group that is acting as an extension of the local police department to help keep the community safe. Joshua Schwager has taken on the role of coordinating this Shomrim group effort. Josh?s experience includes growing up in a house where his father helped start a similar effort in Houston, Texas to the point he actually became a constable Sheriff. Additionally, he has successfully led and organized numerous businesses, events, groups that had very similar needs to the needs of this new Shomrim group. Of note, he started and managed the conversion of Machon Shlomo Yeshiva (Harnoff) into a war-ready facility during the second Gulf War. The group is comprised of volunteers that are acting as unarmed, male-only patrols who are commanded to report suspicious behavior to the local police department. The patrols are to patrol the street in automobiles and not get out of the car to confront any individual. The group is not only focused on street patrol, but also educating and training the community on personal protection, safety, and security including evaluating and implementing home security protocols, procedures, and systems. The initial public 'town-hall' meeting will be taking place at 5 PM this upcoming Sunday, May 9th at new Beis Shalom located at 733 Passaic Ave. near Allwood Road in the Clifton section of town. The meeting will discuss what has been accomplished to date including discussing the policies, protocols, and procedures of the Shomrim group. They are trying to get the local police to attend and answer questions. The meeting will be an opportunity for the community to get involved in the effort to make our community as safe as possible by voicing your opinion on what you feel is needed and how it should and shouldn't be accomplished. Although the local police department is working diligently to stop the recent string of burglaries by adding extra uniform and plain-clothes policeman, it is the responsibility of the community to get involved in the effort to help secure the neighborhood. If you are interested in joining the Shomrim Volunteer Guardians of Greater Passaic/Clifton, please go to the link below and fill out the questionnaire online: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dHM3WUFXWFZkRTRkMzRyYTRsUkhr YWc6MQ If you would like to contact Joshua Schwager directly, you may call 973-580-9909 and/or email bigcat51 at aol.com. My role in this is to serve as the communications liaison for the community. I now reach close to 800 families directly and I also distribute through the shul lists. If you have a neighbor who is not getting these alerts, please tell them to contact me or send them this communiqu? and let them join by clicking here. Please note that a formal 'Town Hall' meeting will take place shortly afterwards once last night's plan has been formally implemented as we need to give the police time to continue to implement their plan. In last night's meeting, we learned the details on the newly instituted and extremely thorough plan the Passaic Police department has recently undertaken to address the increased burglaries in the Passaic area. We solidified the details of how we can best work together help deter, prevent, and stop crime in our community. Thus, we will need a few days to more fully develop our gameplan such that we will experience short and long-term success. We will send out a notice as to when the meeting will be held. Additionally, based on information we learned in the meeting, I want to apologize for incorrectly stating how the recent burglaries have been targeted to the greater Passaic/Clifton Jewish community. However, rest assured, the Passaic Police department is doing more than can be expected to address these aforementioned issues. Although we have the greatest level of confidence that the current problems will be quickly rectified, we must continue to be mindful on the importance of continuous education and training for long-term security. Here are some highlights of the event: 1. An organization called Volunteer Guardians of Passaic/Clifton has been started and is working diligently with the Passaic Police Department and elected officials to coordinate a Citizens on Patrol Community Watch initiative which is patrolling the streets of our community from late event to early morning to enhance the already increased police presence in our area. Over 50 people have already volunteered to join the patrol and more volunteers are welcome and needed. Joshua Schwager has stepped up to lead this organization by bringing together Ezriel Munk, who headed up the previous community watch, the local Rabbonim, elected officials and the Passaic Police Department. You can reach Joshua at Joshua at GuardiansPC.com 2. The Volunteer Guardians of Passaic/Clifton will also be sending safety and security e-mail communications and phone updates to the community, and will host educational safety seminars. Avi Turkel will be coordinating these communications. If you have any questions, you can contact Avi at Avi at GuardiansPC.com. 3. The Passaic Police Department has quadrupled coverage in the area with both marked and unmarked cars. They are stopping any person or vehicle that look suspicious and are inspecting parked vehicles looking for anything suspicious. Thus, please note that cars with expired inspection stickers are more likely to be noticed so please keep them up-to-date or expect to receive a ticket. 4. The group is also in discussions with the Clifton Police to coordinate the same watch program and hopes to have something operational shortly. 5. A police officer from a different jurisdiction with experience in Home Security provided the attendees with 24 safety tips that the community should follow to keep our homes safe. That list will be made available to the community shortly. The seminar will also be repeated in the near future. Details are forthcoming. 6. The community was reminded to report any suspicious activity by calling the police. In Passaic, call 973-365-3938 between 9am and 1am and 973-365-3900 between 1am and 9am, in Clifton call 973-470-5911. In case of an emergency, dial 911 at all times. The Volunteer Guardians of Passaic-Clifton would like to take this opportunity to thank George Matyjewicz for his exceptional work in coordinating communication up to this point. It is clearly an example of a successful grass roots effort. Unfortunately, due to his work with Hatzolah of Passaic/Clifton EMS he is no longer able to continue with communication. Going forward, please contact Avi Turkel (Avi at GuardiansPC.com) with any communications concerns or Joshua Schwager (Joshua at GuardiansPC.com) with any other questions. We also said that we would be seeking your constructive suggestions and we would provide you with a framework within which to present them. The shul faces a challenging financial environment. While we had, Boruch Hashem, a successful dinner, the shul remains in a tenuous financial condition. In fact, for the past few months we have been forced to make withdrawals from the shul's reserve account just to cover the typical day-to-day operating expenses. The shul's membership ranks, for a variety of reasons, have also declined precipitously over the past few years. There is an urgent need for collective action. If membership does not, at minimum, return to its past levels, and if the financial condition does not turn around, it is difficult to imagine how our beloved shul can continue to be your center for davening, learning and chesed. In addition to the fact that Passaic in general and the neighborhood around the Tifereth in particular have plenty of shul options to choose from, new minyanim are also constantly springing up that siphon off members and funds from established batei knessiot. This is the crux of the challenge we face. To that end, on Thursday June 3rd there will be a special board of directors meeting where individual board members intend to make some bold proposals to the full board. The board will then consider these proposals and submit one or more to the General Membership for a vote. If, in addition, you would like to present a proposal to the board, please call or email the shul office by Monday May 31st to be placed on the agenda for the June 3rd Special Meeting. Prerequisites and rules for presenting are: 1. All presenters, whether or not they are members of the board, will be required to be a member in good standing. 2. The intent to present must be "registered" by May 31st in the above described manner. 3. Presentations at the board meeting must include: a. A brief written summary of the proposal. b. The name of at least one Member in good standing that will serve as the spokesperson for the proposal. c. The specifics of how the proposal addresses the financial and membership challenges. 4. Each presentation to the Board will have 30 minutes to make the proposal and answer questions. If you have any questions about this process please do not hesitate to contact me, any Officer or Board Member, or leave a general message with the shul office. For 120 years, our shul -with Hashem's help- has faced myriad grave challenges and used them instead as constructive opportunities that served to strengthen the shul and kehilla. As we begin Tifereth Israel's second 120 years, we daven that the current challenges facing the shul and its membership will again be remembered as a time where we united and grew as a kehilla as well as individually rose to the occasion. Once again, with Hashem's help, we will merit to see the success of our efforts. With utmost thanks for your time and your help.
